Assistant U.S. Attorney Aurora A. Fagan will discuss the issue of ransomware, what it is, efforts by the Department of Justice to combat it, and steps companies/law firms can take to mitigate their exposure to it.

Aurora Fagan has been investigating and prosecuting computer crimes for over twenty years. From 2007 to the present, Aurora Fagan has been an Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Florida (SDFL). She is one of two Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property (CHIP) attorneys in the SDFL, handling the investigation and prosecution of network intrusions, theft and destruction of data, infringement of intellectual property rights and cyberterrorism matters. She handles a variety of criminal investigations and prosecutions, including financial fraud, money laundering, extortion, narcotics trafficking and other violent crimes. Prior to her time at the SDFL USAO, Ms. Fagan was the chief of the Statewide Computer Crimes Task Force at the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Division of Criminal Justice (2004-2006). From 1998-2004, she was an Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan DA’s office under Robert Morgenthau. As a Manhattan ADA, she handled financial crimes such as embezzlement and grand larceny, computer crimes such as website defacements, denial of service attacks and theft of data, and narcotics trafficking. In addition to her prosecutorial duties, Ms. Fagan has spoken at numerous seminars and provided training to prosecutors, federal and state law enforcement groups, and private sector companies in the areas of the handling of digital evidence, search and seizure of computer related evidence, investigation of child exploitation cases, incident response, identity theft and cybersecurity.
