Where Does the Data Get Saved?


Because of the increasing popularity of video conferencing calls over the past year, several concerns have surfaced regarding the security of these calls and where the data that arises from them is stored. This is a very important question to answer, as these meetings can create a treasure trove of information that participants may want or not want to save for future use. This could become an eDiscovery nightmare if the situation arose in which one needed to know whether that information even exists, and if so where. So, whether we are using the video conference call and/or chat related features for court-related proceedings, or for internal-office discussions, having a solid understanding on where the potentially created data may be stored, is essential to protecting your firm, and your client’s data.

For this purpose, we have taken a closer look at some of the most popular video conferencing service providers, and have listed the location where one might look to find the data stored from related to the video and chats during an online meeting.

This vendor allows for you to be save your Zoom meeting locally to your computer or the Zoom cloud (if you are a licensed user).


Zoom offers two types of saving locations for video recordings: local and Zoom cloud. If saved locally, you can typically find the recording in the following location:

  • Windows: C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Zoom
  • Mac: /Users/User Name/Documents/Zoom


The following is the default location for saved chats in Zoom:

  • Documents folder > Zoom > “folder with meeting name, date and time”

Note: The account owner and/or admins for the account can choose whether chat history and video calls are saved (cloud or locally), or if they want them to be saved at all. Additionally, it should be noted that Zoom messages can be stored on the cloud up to 10 years. However, by default, messages are stored on the Zoom cloud servers for 2 years and on local devices for 1 year.


By default, recordings for WebEx meetings are not saved to the host compute’s local drive. Instead, it is saved on the WebEx server.


  • Windows: Recordings started from within a meeting are accessible from the “Documents” folder in “My Computer”.
  • Mac: Recordings started from within a meeting are accessible from the “Home” folder using Finder.


  • Windows: Windows 10: C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents
  • Mac OS X: Webex Meetings: Documents\Date_MeetingName

Note: Keep in mind that these are the “default” paths for your local recordings. However, you are free to select a different location on your computer.
