OVERVIEW
This presentation provides an overview of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and focuses on the concept of Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) in the legal profession. It discusses the impact of trauma on individuals, the signs and symptoms of STS among legal professionals, and the importance of self-care and organizational interventions to mitigate the effects of secondary trauma.
PRESENTER:
Jennifer Lee, Psy.D.
Dr. Jennifer Lee is a clinical psychologist at the Miami VA Medical Center. She works with the Veterans Justice Outreach Program (VJP) and provides evaluation, treatment, and intensive case management with veterans involved in Broward Veterans Court, which is the largest Veterans Court in the State of Florida. She also provides community outreach and training for local law enforcement, attorneys, and judges on Understanding Veterans, PTSD, and Vicarious Trauma for Legal Professionals. Previously, she worked with the Miami VA and West Palm Beach VA PTSD Clinical Teams, treating military related PTSD. Prior to her over 16 years with the VA, she served as a U.S. Navy Psychologist at the Naval Hospital in San Diego and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) in 2004 to Western Iraq with the 1st Marine Division. She completed her undergraduate degree from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, and earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from The Wright Institute in Berkeley, California, with a dissertation study focused on homeless women and trauma.
